High potential and gifted education (HPGE)
Guildford West Public School recognises the varied abilities of all students and works to extend students to achieve their educational potential. Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At Guildford West Public School, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with engaging lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
Within the classroom, teachers at Guildford West:
- Differentiate learning to create high challenge and engagement in their learning
- Give feedback to students to encourage students to reflect and extend their learning
- Use explicit teaching strategies to ensure that all students reach their full potential
- Have input into classroom decisions and value student voice
Every student is individual, so opportunities for students are flexible and diverse. At Guildford West Public School, we offer a wide range of activities to extend students. This includes:
- Press Gang (school newspaper)
- School Choir
- Sport development
- Public Speaking
- Robotics
- Writer's in Residence

Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
